First Over November, 2003: The case breaks out first on National television and Abhijit Kale is pulled out from Maharashtra8217;s Ranji squad. Dalmiya announces the appointment of Bar Council chairman DV Subba Rao as the Commissioner of Inquiry and gives him 15 days. Kale though is suspended.

LEGAL TANGLE December, 2003: The Maharashtra batsman appears before an 8216;internal8217; Maharashtra Cricket Association MCA panel. Soon he takes BCCI, MCA to Pune civil court and demands natural justice. The Civil Court stays the ban, which raises hopes for Kale, but District Court enforces it again.

HIGHER PLANE December, 2003: Subba Rao conducts one-day enquiry, but keeps mum. Meanwhile, Kale changes track and moves the Bombay High Court, where the Rao report finding Kale 8216;prima facie guilty8217; is presented

SEEKING ORDER December, 2003: Based on Subba Rao8217;s report BCCI forms a three-member probe panel. Bombay HC refers back the case to the Civil Court

SLOG OVERS January-June, 2004: BCCI panel meets and issues a show cause notice to Kale giving him 15 days to explain but Kale demands more time to reply. The Civil Court meanwhile reverses its earlier decision, says the ban should not be lifted. Finally Kale replies to the notice and is called after a gap of four months April 2004 to meet the panel twice in a fortnight. The 30-year-old breaks down and offers apology.
