SURAT, Nov 24: Medical students and junior doctors attached to the New Civil Hospital and Surat Government Medical College are fast catching up with the sullied reputation of their counterparts in Commerce and Arts colleges and at times outdoing them.
Known so long for taking to the streets over trivial issues, they are now allegedly getting increasingly involved with criminal activities. Two junior doctors, including Rahul Jeswani, son of Gujarat National Fertilisers Corporation chairman K D Jeswani, were arrested by the Umra police on Monday on charges of assaulting a student.
Incidentally, Dhalaria8217;s tenure as JDA president was marked by innumerable controversies. However, Dhalaria himself evaded censure, allegedly because of his proximity to the powers that be.
Surprisingly, the college authorities do not have any clear-cut policy on how to deal with students or junior doctors involved in police cases. 8220;We can8217;t take action against them until and unless the charges are proved8221;, said a senior administrative official on condition of anonymity.
Some time ago, a resident doctor was terminated following allegations of some JDA members and teachers that he was threatening and intimidating them. However, the College Council decision to terminate him was overruled by Gujarat High Court.
But apart from that incident, the authorities are said to be 8220;soft8221; on students. 8220;More often than not, individual quarrels make it to the police station and the college had no role to play in them,8221; claimed a senior official.
But there is apparently more to this than meets the eye as the student community quarrels are said to be a reflection of division among teachers. Many students claim they are pawns in the power struggle of teachers, who can ruin their careers.
