CHANDIGARH, July 10: Alleged middlemen, along with two other accused, in the engineering department kickbacks case were further remanded to judicial custody till July 24 by UT Additional District and Sessions Judge S. S. Lamba, here today.

The quot;middlemenquot;, Dinesh Sharma, Suresh Kumar Sharma and Sunil Kalia along with executive engineer N. K. Gupta and Superintending engineer Jagdish Mitter were earlier booked by the UT Vigilance Department under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

While Suresh Kumar Sharma, Dinesh Sharma and Sunil Kalia had surrendered before the court, the other two had been arrested.

According to the prosecution, certain diaries mentioning the names of UT Administration officials receiving illegal gratification along with the amount, were recovered during the raids by the Income Tax authorities on the residences of the alleged middlemen in November 1997.

The other accused were, meanwhile, arrested on the basis of the diaries. Arguing before the court, the prosecution had stated that Gupta had received 8220;kickbacks8221; up to Rs 57,500. It had further been alleged that there were at least two entries of Rs 1,75,000 and Rs 85,800 against Mitter8217;s name in the diaries.
