LUDHIANA, Nov 5: The Additional Sessions Judge today reserved the judgment in the bail application moved by Gurbir Singh, son of former chief minister Gurnam Singh, in a cheating case. The order is likely to be issued tomorrow.
Pleading for bail, the counsel for Gurbir Singh said the charges against him had been levelled at the instance of Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal, a minister in the Badal government.
They charged that in order to coerce Gurbir Singh to withdraw litigations against Grewal, the present case has been framed up. They stated that their client has already spent two days in police custody and no recovery has been made from him, and that Gurbir Singh cannot temper with evidence and hence, there is no point in holding him in police remand.
On the controversy over the cheques issued by Gurbir, his counsel said he had issued them in his capacity as president of the Guru Education Trust and a civil case is pending in court.
Arguing for the rejection of the bail application, the counsel for the complainant said the police had already recorded the statements of two key witnesses 8212; a clerk and secretary of the Trust. It was stated that Gurbir had withdrawn the money to give it to advocates fighting his cases. At this, the counsel for Gurbir Singh told the judge that apart from the present case, no criminal case has been registered against their client.
They also produced a High Court document and said that despite the fact that Gurbir Singh had secured anticipatory bail from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the police party barged into his house and took him into custody.
