Veteran producer Yash Johar breathed his last on Saturday, leaving a rich legacy to son Karan Johar and Bollywood. Together, father and son captured on screen a larger-than-life experience, replete with an overdose of glamour and melodrama that became the Johar trademark.

Johar, Toy to family and friends, was admitted to Leelavati Hospital last week and was diagnosed with severe chest infection. He was on life support since then. Earlier this month, Johar had undergone minor surgery at Bombay Hospital and was to go to London for further treatment.

Johar began his career as a production controller and worked with Navketan Films. He set up his own company, Dharma Productions, in 1976 and produced hits such as Dostana, Duniya, Agneepath and Duplicate. The golden era, however, came with his son8217;s first film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Quickly followed by Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kal Ho Naa Ho, establishing the Johar line of entertainers.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was dedicated to his father.
