PUNE, Nov 3: The `Jinxed’ opening of the city’s first fly-over at Paud Phata nearly had the First Citizen in a quandary today as Mayor Vatsala Andekar frantically persuaded the Maharashtra Military Foundation to abort their plans to formally throw it open to the public on an experimental basis on Wednesday.
The MMF had in a statement issued on November 2 invited Andekar, MLA Shashikant Sutar and others to inaugurate the fly-over which would ease the traffic congestion at Karve Road. However when contacted today, Andekar said she was not aware of the invitation and hurriedly called up Colonel Jayantrao Chitale, President of MMF to revise their plans.
Chief Minister Manohar Joshi will be in the city on November 9 and hectic efforts are underway to seek his appointment, the Mayor told Chitale over the telephone. She urged him to cancel the plan towards opening the fly-over on Wednesday. While she said that Chitale had agreed to do so and expressed her appreciation, when contacted, the MMF president was unavailable for comment.
The lack of dignitaries has delayed the opening of the fly-over. Even as the Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s office has expressed his inability to do so, several corporators had pinned their hopes on Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray. However, with rejection from that quarter too, they sought Joshi’s appointment who has left them hanging with no confirmation. Growing resentment from a few organisations over this dilly-dallying had made a few senior BJP corporators firmly decide that even if the CM has no time during his schedule on November 9 to fit in the proposed inauguration, local MLAs and corporators should come together to throw open the flyover to the public.
