Jet, let, go

Apropos of your editorial 8216;Hard landing8217;, no doubt layoffs, in one8217;s professional career, are a painful experience.

8226;Apropos of your editorial 8216;Hard landing8217;, no doubt layoffs, in one8217;s professional career, are a painful experience. But they are an integral part of a globalised economy. Those who benefit from capitalism must also accept its dark side. It is shocking that the affected employees tried to politicise this unfortunate event. They need to remember that if they wish to enjoy the fruits of free market globalisation, they must also be prepared for its risks. If they have the privilege of jumping from one job and quitting another for better emoluments, perks and facilities, why should the employers be denied that right?

8226;This is with reference to 8216;Pink slips at Jet, red and saffron fly into political chance8217;. After Jet forged an alliance with Kingfisher, it deemed it fit to take drastic action against its employees. The mass-scale retrenchment of this magnitude will have an adverse impact on the staff. The Jet management should have given adequate notice, as well as honestly updated its employees on the financial position of the company, wherein the staff could have chipped in with better ways and means to stabilise the airline. The layoff of employees would not have allowed political parties to exploit the situation. Thankfully, the situation has been somewhat salvaged, with Jet taking back the dismissed employees.

Vox populi

8226; The Indian Express has covered the appalling violence in Orissa very well. In the ensuing state and Lok Sabha elections, voters should jointly teach a lesson to politicians, who are under the impression that communal politics and hatred of religious minorities can bring them electoral dividends. It is only the voice of the people that can salvage politics from politicians.

Not a good idea

8226;This refers to media reports that the Shahi Imam of Delhi8217;s Jama Masjid is going to form a separate Muslim party. This will only hurt the interests of the Muslim community. He is using the confusion created by the Jamia encounter for personal gain. Priests must do what they do best: spread religious values, not dabble in the politics of personal gains.

Sublime Ganguly

8226;Your editorial 8216;Missing Ganguly8217; clearly highlights that Sourav Ganguly is one of the best captains world cricket has seen. It is unfortunate for Indian cricket that Ganguly has announced that he will retire. As his age increases, a cricketer8217;s ability deteriorates; but in Ganguly8217;s case this theory has been proved wrong. A player of his standing doesn8217;t believe in going through the motions. He will for ever be remembered for the grace and equanimity he brought to the field.
