
SRINAGAR, SEPT 10: Three days after the killing of BJP candidate Ghulam Hyder Noorani, former Union minister of state for home and Janata Dal United nominee from Anantnag Lok Sabha seat, Mohammad Maqbool Dar, today escaped an assassination bid by heavily armed militants at Shadimarg in Pulwama district of South Kashmir, police said.
Dar escaped unhurt but one of his security guards was wounded seriously when the militants opened fire at his motorcade in the village, some 30 km from here, while he was proceeding to address a public meeting, police said.
The injured cop was shifted to hospital where his condition was stated to be serious.
The attack on JDU candidate from the constituency comes close on the heels of killing of BJP nominee G H Noorani and two others on Tuesday, which forced the Election Commission to countermand the election in the constituency.
A group of heavily armed militants fired from automatic weapons on the motorcade of Dar while he was on way to the village to address a public meeting. His personal security officers immediately returned the fire but the militants fled.
However, one of the police guards was hit by militants8217; bullets and was shifted to hospital in a serious condition.
The latest militants8217; strike sent shock waves among political circles as security had been stepped up in the constituency after the killing of the BJP nominee.
