NEW DELHI, JAN 1: The Janata Dal today demanded a ban on the activities of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad for its alleged role in the violence against Christians in various parts of Gujarat.

Party general secretary and former Member of Parliament Wasim Ahmed, in a statement, also criticised the Central Government for adopting a 8220;soft8221; attitude towards Vishwa Hindu Parishad. The general secretary of the Janata Dal also alleged that the Government was doing the same for other fundamentalist groups which were trying to spread communal hatred in the country.

Ahmed said it was strange that the allies of the Bharatiya Janata Party were keeping a discreet silence on the incidents against Christians and urged secular parties to launch a countrywide movement against attempts such as these to create a communal divide.
