CHANDIGARH, April 19: It is yet another case of a man running from pillar to post to get justice.
Naib Subedar Ranveer Singh has been serving in the Army for the last 22 years. A qualified coach, he has participated in various national-level marathon championships from 1979 to 1990.
Ranveer Singh alleges that his younger brother, Ashok Kumar, and his (Ashok’s) wife, Darshan, have been harassing his wife, Sarla. He has asked the Rohtak police to register an FIR against Ashok Kumar, whom he brought up after his father died.
In his complaint to the Superintendent of Police, Rohtak, dated January 31, 1998, Ranveer Singh, from Ghorpuri, Pune, the place of his posting, asked for police protection for his family in Rohtak. He further requested that his brother be warned against troubling his wife.
The letter was forwarded with the remarks of Commanding Officer Lt. Colonel S A Cruze, saying “the JCO is a national-level coach and has to proceed repeatedly on temporary duties. A subtle warning,” suggested the letter, “to the brother should smoothen things and let the family live in peace.” However, the police did not take any action against the accused.
On April 11, Sarla, was assaulted by Ashok and Darshan. According to the complaint, the couple entered the house after jumping the boundary wall and in the scuffle that followed, Sarla sustained injuries. Ashok and Darshan also received injuries.
The police rushed Sarla, who was found unconscious, to the Civil Hospital. Later, her neighbours shifted her to Rohtak Medical College where she is convalescing.
Meanwhile, Ranveer who was in Pune, was informed telegraphically of the incident. In a letter dated April 12, Ranveer’s Commanding Officer A. K. Mehta “requested the SSP to intervene in the matter and ensure that a uniformed soldier receives justice. The copy of the FIR lodged may please be sent to this office for further necessary action.”
Meanwhile, Ashok Kumar is working as Sub-Inspector in Battalion Number 118 of the CRPF. He has also lodged a complaint with police, it is learnt.
The SP said Sarla had sustained simple injuries and a complaint has been lodged in the roznamcha under Section 107 and 151 of the CrPC. If evidence suggesting that she sustained serious or grievous injuries is produced, an FIR will be lodged.
However, no FIR was lodged till the filing of the report.
