CHENNAI, FEBRURY 4: A gold and diamond-studded waistband weighing over one kg, similar to the one produced in the Special Court-I today, was found missing during raids by the DVAC at the Poes Garden residence of Jayalalitha in December 1996, it is learnt.
DVAC officials had specifically looked for the waistband following the recovery of a colour photograph of the former Chief Minister and her confidante Sasikala draped in wedding finery and donning identical jewellery. The photograph showed both women wearing similar sarees, ear-studs, necklaces, waistbands, bangles and rings.
While all the other items of jewellery were recovered, the DVAC could find just one waistband. Hence, it is unclear who wore the waistband marked in the court today 8212; Jayalalitha or Sasikala.
Incidentally, when the waistband was being marked, the defence counsel asked the judge to confirm if one diamond was missing from it. When the judge questioned why the doubt had risen, he replied that 8220;I was told so.8221; However, the valuer had a second look at the ornament and assured that all was in place.
Meanwhile, in a ring produced today, 12 saphire stones were recorded to be missing. Similarly, two pearls were missing from an ear-stud.
With the next hearing scheduled for February 9, the witness Vasudevan, who was seen rubbing his eyes apparently due to severe strain, is bound to get some relief. The last time he had apprised the jewels for four days in December 1996, he had ended up with a swollen eye.
