DECEMBER 23: Sanjay JAGTAP AND Abhinav Bhatt kept Mumbai City Police in the race for the Police Shield at the Police Gymkhana ground on Thursday. On day two of the summit clash against Shivaji Park Gymkhana, Jagtap (50: 145b, 6×4, 1×6) and Bhatt (44) raised 82 runs for the second wicket to post a challenge to the rivals’ first innings score of 323.

However, the SPG bowlers struck back claiming six wickets for the addition of 64 runs, which included Jagtap and Bhatt among the victims. But the seventh wickt pair of Ramesh Pawar (batting 39) and Amir Banji (batting 16) extended the battle to the next day with a gritty unbroken association of 35 runs. At close, the Cops were placed at a precarious 212-6, another 112 runs away from the title.

Earlier, SPG resuming at their overnight score of 301-9, added another 22 runs with the last-wicket pair of R Malviya and Rajesh Prabhudesai raising 34 runs.

Brief Scores: Shivaji Park Gymkhana 323 in 91.5 overs (Sushant Manjrekar 129, Shreyas Khanolkar 34, Bhimesh Shah 42; Manish Sakhalkar 3-74, Ramesh Pawar 5-58) vs Mumbai City Police 212-6 in 74 overs (Abhinav Bhatt 44, Sanjay Jagtap 50, Ramesh Pawar batting 39; Sriram Kannan 2-46, Shreyas Khanolkar 2-51).

Shardashram rally
Shardashram Marathi staged a fine rally to upstage CD Barfiwala by 34 runs at the Azad Maidan on Thursday and cruised into the quarter-finals of the MSSA-Colgate Inter-School Giles Shield Cricket Tournament.

After medium-pacer Prasad Bhosle (8-42) had wreaked havoc to their first innings, Shardashram fought back to bowl out the opposition for 120. Being eight runs in arrears, Shardashram gave a better account in the second essay posting 130-4 before declaring the innings.

Barfiwala chasing 122 for victory were shot out for 88 with left-arm spinner Dinar Gaonkar (3-27) and leg-spinner Vikram Chichulkar (5-36) doing most of the damage.

In the other encounter of the day, Balmohan Vidyamandir downed Don Bosco on the basis of first innings to book a berth in the quarters.

Don Bosco 145 (Siddesh Mungekar 3-22) & 89-6 decl lost to Balmohan Vidyamandir 171 (Shavarin Bhuta 5-45, Sanket Chavan 4-47) & 34-1 on the basis of 1st innings.
