The CBI has found that the five suspects charged with the murder of NCP treasurer Ram Avtar Jaggi were not involved with the murder. They were paid to volunteer for the arrests and promised their ‘‘well-being’’ during the trial.
The finding sparked an outcry from former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi who said it was a ‘‘well thought conspiracy and a crude attempt’’ by the government to implicate political opponents. He has dashed off a letter to Governor Seth, calling for his intervention.
Jaggi was killed by unidentified attackers in May last year; his family had suspected the hand of then CM Jogi and his son Amit.
The finding came when two key suspects recorded their statements at a local court yesterday. The suspects, Mahant Pathak alias Bulthoo and Suresh Singh, who are still in CBI custody, said they were not even remotely connected with the crime. All the accused, who have criminal records, were ‘‘contracted’’ to become accused in the murder and later brought to Raipur from UP. The CBI is now looking for a local Congress leader who reportedly approached Mahant Pathak and Suresh Singh for the “job”.
The CBI now proposes to get the statements of all five accused recorded in court and produce other evidences to support their contention.
