ANANDPUR SAHIB, April 13: Punjab wrestlers cornered glory on the concluding day, winning two of the three titles at stake, in the Khalsa International Sports Festival at the Charan Singh Ganga Stadium here today.
In kabaddi, the Punjab Yellows beat Punjab Blues 48-43 in the final for the title.
Jagdish Singh (Punjab) won the World Khasla Kesri Award (86kg) defeating statemate Shamsher Singh on points in the final bout. Jagdish won Rs. 1.25 Lakh in cash plus a silver plate. Shamsher was given a purse of Rs. 60,000 while the third-placed wrestler Bhagat Singh (UP) was richer by Rs. 40,000.
In the 76kg category for the Bhai Dharam Singh award, the Chandigarh lad Sujit Mann beat Pawan Kumar (Punjab). Sujit was given Rs. One Lakh while Pawan had to remain content with Rs. 50,000. Joginder Singh (Haryana), who beat Himachal Pradesh’s Rakesh Kumar to finish third got Rs. 30,000.
The Bhai Mokhan Singh award (63kg) went to Mukesh Kumar (Punjab) who beat Gurbinder Singh in the final bout. The winner got Rs. One lakh while the runner-up received Rs. 50,000. Rakesh Kumar who finished third ahead of Pakistan’s Yahid Khan got Rs. 30,000.
Prizes were distributed by the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
Randeep elected RANDEEP Singh Johar and Satish C Pokhriyal were unanimoulsy elected president and general secretary of the Haryana Amateur Body Building Association (HABB) in the general body meeting of the HABB held at Yamunanagar today.
Other office bearers of the HABB elected are: NP Verma and RP Sharma (senior vice-presidents); SK Mahant, OP Chokhar, OP Chauraisa and Bharat Bhushan (vice-presidents); Balbir Singh and Mahesh Chaudhary (joint secretaries); Rajesh V Prakash and Amit Swamy (press secretaries); VS Dalal and Daleep Kumar (organising secretaries); Bal Krishan Dhiman (treasurer); Deepak Jain and Anil Kumar (technical advisors).
MS Mann, Daya Ram, Ram Krishan Arora, Virendra Yadav and Nathu Ram are members of the executive committee.
Prem Chand Degra, Aruna Awardee and Padma Shri was appointed observer by the Indian Body Building Federation.
