SANGLI, Sept 3: For the third time Sharad Pawar confidant and firebrand leader R R Patil is contesting in Tasgaon assembly constituency. Patil seems to stand strong on his homeground.

In assembly elections of 1990 and 1995, Patil had defeated senior Congress leader Dinkaraba Patil, who revolted when denied party nomination. Now when Dinkaraba is on back seat his nephew Sanjay has crossed swords with R R Patil. Dinkaraba and Sanjay, who were working against Congress since R R Patil dominated party in Tasgaon, now have returned to Congress as R R Patil has joined hands with Pawar.

Sanjay is the Congress candidate in this assembly constituency and for the first time since he is in politics R R Patil will contest without Congress banner. Congress leaders in the district pressured State Congress committee to nominate Sanjay as its candidate, but this decision of leaders annoyed Vijay Anna Patil, who was an aspirant for party8217;s nomination.

Vijay with his supporters joined NCP camp and announced that he will work for R R Patil in Tasgaon constituency, and now he is main campaigner of NCP in this constituency. R R Patil is already in strong position after big victory in Tasgaon sugar elections conducted a few months back, in which Dinkaraba Patil8217;s panel was heavily defeated and was not able to win a single seat.

Even Dinkaraba himself was defeated in these elections. But the Congress was united during that period, but even though when now Congress stands divided, the opponents are not in a position to put up a challenge against R R Patil.

Sena has nominated another Patil from this constituency. Sanjay Dattu Patil is contesting as saffron alliance candidate. But BJP workers in Tasgaon are unhappy with this decision.

Balasaheb Kulkarni, one of the senior BJP leader has revolted against the party and is now contesting as Independent candidate. Kulkarni8217;s candidature has left the saffron alliance in the lurch. Kulkarni was demanding party nomination from this constituency, but Sena workers were not ready to leave this seat for BJP.

Now Sena-BJP votes are divided in two camps and the Congress is weakened by Vijay Patil8217;s support to the NCP. R R Patil has strong hold on co-operative sector in Tasgaon. He is also working as chairman of Tasgaon sugar mill, which is key post in Tasgaon Politics. Not only in his constituency but in Bhilwadi-Wangi assembly constituency, where Sharad Pawar antagonist Patangrao Kadam is contesting against Prithviraj Deshmukh, NCP candidate in keen tussle, R R Patil is playing important role.

R R Patil has influence in this constituency and with Jayant Patil, he is given responsibility of his consent to Vaibhav Naikwadi8217;s candidature in Walwa constituency.

Jayant Patil has been given three responsibilities by NCP president Sharad Pawar: victory for himself with big margin in Walwa constituency, victory of Prithviraj Deshmukh, who has crossed swords with Patangrao Kadam and most important victory of Shriniwas Patil in Karad Lok Sabha seat, where Congress big wig Prithviraj Chavan is contesting.

This seat is of most important for NCP, as Karad is the home ground of late Yeshwantrao Chawan who was the political guru of Sharad Pawar. Some part of Walwa and Shirala assembly constituency8217;s which is dominated by Jayant comes in Karad Lok Sabha Seat. When congress was united it was Jayant Patil, who gave huge lead every time to the Congress candidate in Karad Lok Sabha seat.

But besides all these responsibilities Jayant is not negligent towards his constituency, where he completed two rounds of campaigning even before his nomination was announced by NCP. For people in Walwa assembly constituency, as they say, Jayant is next minister in state cabinet. 8220;We are not worried about his victory, but we want to give him largest margin in state,8221; said NCP worker in Rajaram Nagar.
