The Hero Honda Masters title and all that goes with it went to the best golfer this week. In my book nobody deserved to win the title more than Jo (Jyoti Randhawa). Hats off to him for a magnificient round. To come up with six under on the final day and after such a tense third day when he was penalised two strokes is something. And also remember he lost the PGAI title last week after a five-hole play-off.

I read in some papers that he said the penalty made him a stronger player and a stronger man. That’s what golf is all about. The title, his first on the Omega Tour, gets him a lot of advantages, including an exemption on the Tour for the next two years. A major title like this means a big push for his career.

As for me, I would be lying if I said I am not disappointed. Last week I was third at Singapore. And now second at the Hero Honda Masters. So hopefully next week when I play in Bangkok, I will be up there, first. But I am proud to have played well and that Indians finished first and second. Add tothis Arjun Atwal, the only guy to play four sub-par rounds, who was joint fourth with Rob Huxtable, who shot the day’s best of 65, and Mike Cunning, my playing partner for three of the four days.

Today, even when I was two over after nine, I did not get tense. I have been playing well so I knew I would make up on the back nine, which I did. Sure, I kept track of Jyoti’s scores. I heard that he was 11 under after 13 holes. I was behind his group and I was seven under. I knew I had to make a charge and go all out. I tried my best and had birdies on the 13th and 14th.

The birdie on the 13th, a long 30-footer was the best I had. A long curling shot that dropped in. But today Jyoti was blazing away. He birdied 13th, 14th and finally 18th, too. In between there was a stroke he dropped, but it just didn’t matter. It was his day.
