CHANDIGARH, July 23: The investigation wing of the Directorate of Income Tax, Chandigarh, today conducted raids at the shops and the residences of the partners of Bharat Medical Store, Sector 16 here.
It is learnt that approximately Rs 14 lakh, bogus NRI gifts and loans from agriculturists have been recovered during the raids. The raids started yesterday and have not concluded yet. Investigations and enquiries regarding the investments in the immovable property and stock are still under process.
It is learnt that the raids were carried out at five premises of the partners simultaneously, including two shops and three residences. The raids came following allegations of a nexus between prominent doctors of the PGI, Government Medical College and General Hospital.
Sources revealed that these chemists stocked the surgical items and implants for key surgeries and the doctors were promoting them by referring their patients here. The chemists in turn were allegedly charging exorbitant rates for these items. When contacted, a partner of the shop Hans Raj Garg denied any nexus with the doctors. He also denied that Rs 14 lakh approximately in cash or any NRI gifts had been recovered from his residence. He added that the agriculturists had given loans but no gifts.
8220;We are direct importers for many companies and sell things at rates lower than those in Delhi. This is simply a case of professional jealousy,8221; asserted Garg.
