A breakthrough in months of political deadlock cleared the way today for Iraq8217;s parliament to launch the process of putting together a new government aimed at pulling the country out of its sectarian strife.

Acting speaker Adnan Pachachi convened the session at mid-afternoon today in the heavily guarded Green Zone.

Shi8217;ite lawmaker Ridha Jawad Taqi said all sides were agreed on a package deal for the top spots in the parliamentary vote expected on Saturday: Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, would remain as president for a second term, with Sunni Arab Tariq al Hashimi and Shi8217;ite Adil Abdul Mahdi holding the two vice-president spots.

On Friday, the Shi8217;ite alliance nominated a tough-talking Shi8217;ite politician, Jawad al Maliki, as prime minister in a move that broke the long impasse.

Meawhile, a roadside bomb killed four US soldiers on combat patrol south of Baghdad today, the US Military said.
