
Protesting against UK8217;s decision to knight Salman Rushdie, an Iranian group today announced an pound;80,000 bounty on his head prompting Scotland Yard to review the security of the India-born author.
Rushdie, who turned 60 today, is all set to get round-the-clock police protection.
The bounty was offered by the Tehran-based Organisation to Commemorate the Martyrs of the Muslim World, which said it would pay an award of pound; 80,000 reward to anyone 8220;who was able to execute the apostate Salman Rushdie8221;.
Rushdie spent a decade under the threat of an Islamist death sentence after his book The Satanic Verses was deemed blasphemous for its irreverent depiction of the Prophet.
The same day, Pakistan summoned the UK envoy to the Foreign Office to convey its resentment over the honour bestowed on Rushdie.
