VADODARA, Aug 8: The western on-shore business unit of ONGC, Vadodara, organised an Inter-Regional IT Information Technology meet recently. The meet was chaired by Director Technical of ONGC, R C Gourh. N Lal, Executive Director, delivered the welcome speech and hoped that the meet would provide the necessary thrust to various IT projects being implemented in ONGC, which will revolutionise its functioning and bring it at par with international oil majors.

While delivering the inaugural address, Gourh emphasised the need to develop a vision of organisational effectiveness through IT. He emphasised that IT systems should be developed to provide information at the right time and place for expeditious decision making, leading to enhanced efficiency and productivity.

Gourh stressed upon the need to integrate various enterprise networks like UFSA upgradation of financial system in ONGC, IMMS Integrated material management system, SHRAMIK Human Resource, EPINET Exploration and Production information network to create a unified working environment for smooth data exchange. He sought identification of suitable IT personnel to form a team for IT management.

Well thought-out plans to train and re-train personnel to transform them into knowledge workers are also required, he said.

ONGC has one of the nation8217;s best communication networks. The present and future communication and networking plans of various regions of ONGC were discussed during the meet.

To combat the potential Y2K pitfalls, ONGC is well-equipped to achieve timely damage control by September 1999 in key areas, i.e. off-shore and on-shore production installations, on-shore process plants like Hazira and Uran, and its communication network.

Due emphasis has been given to maximise the use of IT tools to enable accessibility of information at the desktop. The present executive to PC ratio in ONGC is 11:1. The security and safety of information are stressed upon.

Assembly executive committee8217;s visit: The executive committee of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly recently visited ONGC8217;s LPG plant at Ankleshwar. On their maiden visit to the ONGC installation, the committee envinced interest in the varied activities of the oil major. The committee was welcomed by R K Singh, General Manager Operations.

Committee President Mr Dhiribhai Haribhai Gajera and members were taken around the plant. A brief presentation was made on the Ankleshwar project in particular and the ONGC western region in general. ONGC8217;s efforts at environmental protection and socio-economical development in its operational areas were also highlighted for the visitors.
