Boys are working very hard this time and, Inshallah, we will win the gold medal,8217;8217; claimed the celebrated centerhalf and former skipper of the Pakistan hockey team Akhtar Rasool.

Speaking to The Indian Express from Lahore, the chairman of the Pakistan hockey selection committee said 8216;8216;after Barcelona in 1992 we have not won a medal but Athens could be a different story.8217;8217;

8216;8216;Sohail Abbas is a world-class player and our team depends a lot on him to covert the chances that come our way,8217;8217; Akhtar showered praises on the ace penalty corner specialist.

Assistant coach Tahir Zaman, however, was more practical. 8216;8216;Although the Indians failed to give good results in Europe, they still have the potential to stage a comeback in the Games,8217;8217; he said.

Without making a direct comment on the appointment of foreign coach Gerhard Rach for the Indian team, Rasool said, 8216;8216;It does not matter who is coaching. The important thing is to avail the chance of learning wherever it comes from. Like in education, there is no end to learning in hockey also. Even when I was adjudged the best player in the world in 1982 my father used to point out my mistakes.8217;8217;

Incidentally, Roelant Oltmans, a Dutch coach, is attached with the Pakistan team. Rasool strongly believes the subcontinent style of hockey is attractive and a match between India and Pakistan makes it even better. The proposed forthcoming series and the clash between the two nations in the Olympic Games will revive hockey in a major way, he feels.

Rasool is now a political advisor to the Chief Minister of Punjab. He advocates regular exchange between the two countries. 8216;8216;It is better that we will play at club, university and national levels with each other. It helps both sides. Now that we are going towards peace and friendship, the exchange visits is even easier, he says.
