
MUMBAI, August 27: The Industry Orientation Project (IOP) initiated by the Mumbai University was received with much enthusiam at the meeting held on Friday. Introduced by Dr B L Mungekar, Vice-Chancellor, Mumbai University, the project was welcomed by the representatives of both the Industry and the Academia.
The Industry response was equally encouraging and many of the corporate representives pledged every support to the project and even gave some guidance necessary for its smooth running. Kushro Khan, Vice-President of the Bombay Chamber of Commerce, who has been involved with the project from it’s experimental stages, said that the project will prepare the students to make an easy transition from campus to work place.
Prasad Chandran, Managing Director of the BASF group and member of the Indo- German Chamber of Commerce, expressed pleasure at the initiative. According to him, the market dictates the products, products don’t dictate the market. Hence, he said it is imperative to produce what the market demands. He said that it’s was a absolute neccesity to shape up the students to suit the Industry needs, rather than complaining about the inadequacies of the education system. He pledged his complete support of his company for the project, besides promising to recommend it to the German MNCs doing business in Mumbai.
According to Vikas Kasliwal, Director of S Kumars Group of companies, extra-curriculur activities in the colleges needed to be given more prominence. He said that that would help to improve the students’communication as well as develop his/her leadership qualities. which would help the student to deal with the corporate world more adequately. He further added that he being an ex-student of the Mumbai University is proud that the University has come up with such an innovative and practical project.
Other Industrial representives who spoke on the occassion included Viraf Mehta of Kotak Mahindra, Harish Mehta of Onward Technologies, Mayukh Miti of Telco and T R Venkatesh of Goodlass Nerolac. Around 30 represntatives from major corporate companies attended the meeting, while the Academia was represented by Principles and Head of the Departments from the various colleges of the city.
