
India and Russia will engage in their latest anti-terror exercise8212;a 10 day airborne operation to engage international terror groups on foreign soil8212;in the riverine plains of Pskov from Tuesday. Over 400 Special Forces personnel will jointly carry out operations to 8220;destroy8221; terrorist hideouts deep in enemy territory using UAVs, airpower and state-of-art battle equipment during the exercise.
Indra 07, a follow up of anti terror exercises conducted by the two armies in the deserts of Rajasthan in 2005, will also be witnessed by a tri services delegation headed by Army Chief General J J Singh. Elite Russian troops from the 76 Airborne Division and paratroopers from the Indian Special Forces are participating in the manouvres.
8220;The exercise will involve cross-country movement over 100 km post an air insertion, assault crossing of a river obstacle, destruction of terrorist hideouts and extrication from the target area into neutral territory. It has been structured to enhance interoperability and maximise mutual learning from each other8217;s rich combat experiences,8221; an Army officer explained.
The scenario being played out during the exercise will involve the launching of a joint airborne force under the mandate of UN for 8220;seeking and eliminating terrorist leadership operating from a neutral country, at their request8221;.
8220;The manouvres will involve joint surveillance, acquiring and assessing of intelligence, joint planning and will culminate in a multi-directional mass airborne insertion and tactical paradrop of troops,8221; the officer confirmed.
A delegation of 38 Indian Air Force personnel, including 29 air warriors, aboard an IL 76 aircraft will also participate in the manouvres as observers.
