
A student of the Indian Statistical Institute ISI in North 24 Parganas committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room early on Wednesday morning. Police are yet to find out the reasons why Sougata Bhattacharya22, first year student of B Statistics, took the step.
8220;We are examining the call details of his cell phone. He had made a call at 1.30 am. We are not sure about the reason behind the suicide, 8220; said Praveen Kumar Tripathi, Additional Superintendent of Police North 24 Parganas.
Police also said a piece of paper was recovered from his pocket. It read8212; 8220;No reason. Only reason 8212;- Moron,8221; hinting that the deceased had performed poorly in his examinations. His friends, however, say he was an extremely bright student.
8220;We are shocked at it. It is a great loss for us. He was a brilliant student and exceptionally good at Maths,8221; said Riddhiman, a classmate of the deceased. Bhattacharya had topped the mid-semester exam a few months ago and was appearing for his semester examinations to be held in December, said his friends.
He was with his friends till late in the night and played table tennis. When they did not find him at the breakfast table in the morning, they went to his room and found him hanging, the police said.
Bhattacharya was a resident of Nabaneer Apartment on R N Das Road at Dhakuria. His father, Debasish Bhattacharya, is an officer with the Indian Oil. 8220;The family was informed about the incident at 10 am. We have no clue about the death and demand an inquiry into the incident,8221; said a relative of the deceased. The ISI authorities have postponed the semester examinations to January.
