An Indian surgeon won £1 million in damages in a racial discrimination case against British Medical Association for refusing to support him in his fight against the National Health Service. Rajendra Choudhary filed the case against the Department of Health after he was repeatedly passed over for promotion.
He was awarded £815,000 on grounds of racial discrimination. The BMA appealed on 39 grounds to the employment tribunal, but the appeal was turned down and raised Chaudhary’s award to £1 million.
After winning his case, Dr Chaudhary said: ‘‘I think many people will be shocked that a medical institution like BMA is guilty of racial discrimination — but that is the truth.’’
