DUBAI, Jan 4: Defending champions India outplayed a youthful Australia 15-4, 15-7, 15-5 to virtually assure themselves of a place in the last four of the Rashid International Volleyball Championship here last night.

Expecting a stiff fight from the Australians, who had finished third in the 1997 Asian Championship, India started cautiously before getting into the rhythm.

In another group A encounter, Ukraine, who had beaten India on Saturday night, crushed the United Arab Emirates UAE juniors 15-6, 15-1, 15-6 to ensure a semi-final slot for themselves.

After the loss of their opening league engagement to the Ukrainians, India needed to win against Australia last night to stay on course for a semi-final berth.

The match, which lasted a little over an hour, saw the Indians come up with, in Australian coach Stelio de Rocco8217;s words, 8220;beautiful volleyball with great passing and combination work8221;.
