India restricted to brief appearance

Making it to the finals, Sharath and Poulomi wilt under Singaporeans8217; scourge

.

It was ITTF Pro Tour Indian Open final day, and the little children gathered in the audience on a rainy Sunday had a reason to cheer for the host country, with Indian presence in both the finals 8212;A Sharath Kamal in the men8217;8217;s and Poulumi Ghatak in the women8217;s final.

Their spirits would have been dampened a bit though, after neither Sharath nor Ghatak managed to cause the upset they were so wanted to and in fact succumbed to easy defeats.

Ghatak, who received a walkover in her semi-final from Meng Yu Yu to meet top-seed Bei Bei Sun in the title-match, began with 0-4 in the first game But that proved to be only a red herring. 8-11, 2-11, 8-11, 3-11, and it was over in less than 16 minutes.

The India number one looked nervous from the start, and with her usually strong serve not working, the Singporean was never under any sort of pressure. Treating the connoisseur to a complete array of shots, and changing flanks at will, Sun 8212; the world number 34 8212; literally raced through to the title.

As the rain began to fall and yesterday8217;s memories resurfaced, play on one of the tables had to be abandoned and the men started their show. The first two sets must have been a blur to Sharath. 7 minutes was all it took for Gao to take a 2-0 lead, having an answer for everything that Sharatha put on the table.

The Commonwealth Games champion finally found his game, pulling ahead from 5-5 in the third game, and varying his pace and committing fewer errors, edged through 12-10. But that change of tactics failed to deter Gao further. Using the Indian8217;s pace and not giving him any time to plan the next shot, he sailed through the next two to win 11-5, 11-3, 10-12, 11-6, 11-6.

Earlier, in the doubles finals, surprise finalists Divya Deshpande and Pooja Sahasrabudhe took a game off top seeds Sun and Meg but lost 6-11, 11-6, 11-1, 11-7, 13-11. On the men8217;s side, the all-Singaporeran affair ended with a victory for the top seeds again, Gao and his partner Zi yang beating Li Xiao Cai and Liang Ma 11-9, 11-9, 11-5, 9-11, 7-11, 11-5.
