PUNE, May 3: Chairman and managing director of Bajaj Auto Ltd, Rahul Bajaj on Saturday observed that given a proper educational system, India has the ability to become a great economic power by the year 2020.

Inaugurating the B K Birla Centre for Education, a residential school for boys located at Shirgaon village in Maval taluka around 30 kms from Pune, Bajaj pointed to the explosive situation where statistics according to the National Sample Survey revealed that three out of every five unemployed youth were educated till secondary school level. Citing the example of America and Japan, he stated that the former continues to be powerful than the latter because of its expertise in aviation and information technology.

Nearer home, China commanded more respect than India in America because of its economic power, he explained, adding that becoming a economic power is considered more important than being a military power.

Bemoaning the fact that many countries which were backward in the 1950s had raced ahead of India, Bajaj argued that while he is proud of being an Indian, he finds it a little difficult to hold his head high because of the existing state of affairs in the country. 8220;What is the use of our 5,000-year-old culture if more than half the country8217;s population continues to survive on an income of one dollar a day,8221; he asked.

Although India possess the necessary talent and is presently the fifth largest economic power in the world, its teamwork needs a lot to be desired, he lamented, stressing the need to separate education from politics.

Earlier Sarala Birla, founder of the institution expressed hope that the new institution would fulfill the noble purpose of educating young minds.

Rajkumar Dalmiya, executive president, Century Textile Works in his welcome address informed that the school constructed at a cost of Rs 13 crore spread over 60 acres would begin classes from Std IV to Std VII. The second phase which would involve expansion to Std X would be built at a cost of Rs 15 crore in the second phase.
