Padukone Academy in Pune
Pune: The Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy will open its `branch’ centre at the Western India Enterprise complex in Pune from July One. Announcing the project the former shuttle ace said the centre, the first of its kind outside Bangalore, will serve as the feeder centre for the main academy at Bangalore.
The Pune academy, sponsored by BPL, has been set up with the active help and assistance from Pune District and Metropolitan Badminton Association. Former Maharashtra ace Hemant Hardikar and noted coach Anil Modak have been chosen coaches for the academy.
Irudayam reigns
Nagpur: Top seed and world champion Anthony Maria Irudayam from Indian Airlines added one more feather to his cap when he retained the men’s singles title in 28th Senior National and Inter-state carrom championship. R Sharmila of Tamil Nadu retained the women’s singles title. The LIC pair of P Nirmala and Shilpa Joshi bagged the women’s double while Jagan Bengle and Raju Katare of Bank SportsBoard clinched the title in their section.
Indians in lead
Kozhikode: British player Peter Brown, Fide-rated national stars K Haridas (Tamil Nadu), N Abdul Majeed and TK Joseph (both Kerala) earned two points each in the second round of International Rating chess tournament for the Hoorulyn Trophy.
Fide woman master Bindu K Saritha and K Abhimod (both Tamil Nadu ), KR Madhusoodanan, national boys champion Rahul Sangma, Pondichery state champion Rangrajan and SS Sivan (Goa) earned one point each in the 11-round schedule.
