Seeking to allay apprehensions on India8217;s trustworthiness in the wake of uncertainty over the Indo-US nuclear deal, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday reassured the international community that the country has been a 8216;reliable Partner8217; and never reneged on its international commitments.
8220;Whether it is on trade policy or on climate change, or indeed on any international obligation, India has always worked with the global community,8221; he said while addressing the Fortune Global Forum here.
The Prime Minister8217;s reassurance comes amidst the continuing standoff between the Government and the Left parties in operationalising the nuclear deal.
Though he made no reference to the deal, his comments assume significance as questions have been raised on whether India could be trusted on implementing any future international accord.
8220;India has never reneged on its international commitments. India has been a reliable partner, a responsible global citizen. India respects the rule of law. India is, therefore, a predictable partner,8221; he said emphasising that this is what made an attractive destination for investors.
Singh8217;s comments comes days after he spoke about the compulsions of competitive politics and fractured mandates which made it 8216;difficult8217; for governments to do what is 8216;manifestly obvious8217;.
The deal has been virtually on hold with the Left parties warning the government of serious consequences if it operationalised it.
