Loaded with a heavy agenda for its three-day National Executive, starting here tomorrow, the BJP today said Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s foreign origin will be an election issue in the Lok Sabha polls.

Party general secretary Pramod Mahajan said at a press conference that since the Congress has tried to position Sonia as its prime ministerial candidate to lead ‘‘an alternative coalition’’, she will have to match the calibre, stature and origin of Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee in the Lok Sabha elections. Therefore, her foreign origin is bound be an important election issue.

Mahajan said the focus was now on the Assembly elections in the five states and the executive would finalise strategy for the states. The Ram Janmabhoomi issue, according to him, will figure prominently and the party proposes to come out with either a resolution suggesting a solution to the issue or will make a general statement. ‘‘We will discuss all aspects, including the possibilities of passing a law,’’ said Mahajan. He made it clear the BJP, as per Palampur resolution, was for construction of the temple at the site.

Asked about the compulsions to include the Ayodhya issue in its agenda for the Raipur meeting, Mahajan said: ‘‘All burning issues are included for discussions at the National Executive. So the temple issue is very relevant.’’ He added that except for the 1999 elections, which were fought on the NDA manifesto, the Ram temple had always been part of the BJP agenda.
