PUNE, SEPT 9: In what is being widely regarded as a major breakthrough in web-based learning, Engineering graduates can now now get a Master8217;s degree sitting in their homes by accessing the course material on the net.

Chennai-based Anna University has signed an agreement with Pune-based ETH Education of Home research lab to provide Master of Engineering ME Degree courses through web-based learing, ETH lab Chairman Vijay Bhatkar announced at a Press conference here yesterday evening.

For the first time in India, it has now become possible to take professional education at the post graduation PG level through internet-based learning, Dr Bhatkar, the founder Executive Director of Pune-based Centre for Development of Advanced Computing CDAC, who formed the ETH lab and 8220;dishnet8221;, said.

Initially the ME degree courses would be provided in four disciplines 8212; computer science, electronics, electrical engineering and structural engineering 8212; and the course material could be downloaded from the education to home portal on the web site 8220;education.Eth.Net8221; from September 13 when the education portal will be formally unveiled by Dr R A Mashelkar, Director General of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, here, he said.

About 1000 students are expected to undertake the two-year course, which would cost around Rs 1.20 lakh, Dr Bhatkar said adding that all the teaching would be on-line with the exception of examination which would have to be undertaken physically at the Anna University.

Under the agreement, the Anna University and the ETH lab would share the course fee in the ratio of 65:35.
