RI for rapist
Bhavnagar district session judge Sejpal sent Vallabh Avsar Patel of Haripar village of Gadhada taluka to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 10,000 for raping an eight-year-old girl. On January 9, 1998, 21-year-old Vallabh sent the girl to fetch a match box. When she brought it, he allegedly started talking to her and then closed the doors and raped her. She returned to her house crying. A police complaint was lodged was January 16. The court ordered the accused to pay Rs 7,000 out of his fine amount to the victim.

Fund allotted
The government of India has decided to form a new structure of continuing education in place of Adult Education after assessment and Rs 3.80 crore has been allocated for Bhavnagar district for 1999-2000. An action plan has been prepared for 11 talukas, five nagarpalikas and one mahanagar palika which will cover 2,03,421 people in 640 education centres according to J P Mayani, the Bhavnagar University head of Continuing Education department here. District development officer Vatsala Vasudeva, collector Rajkumar, District Continuing Education officer K C Kakkad, district primary education officer R N Chavada and others are giving final touches to the project. The Central government will bear full expense on the first year and after that it will bear 50 per cent expense. A continuing education centre will be set up in each village having a population of at least 1,500 to 2,000 people. Classes will be held in the evening or night time.

Health camp
The second anti-tetanus camp was organised at Alang and Sosiya breaking yards by the health department of Bhavnagar district panchayat, Gujarat Maritime Baord GMB, Alang and Gujarat Shipbreaking Association for their workers last Saturday. Some 6,120 workers were vaccinated in the second camp while 13,519 workers were vaccinated in the first camp earlier. DDO Vatsala Vasudeva and epidemic officer Dr Dilawar Rathod supervised the camp along with at least 300 health department employees of 22 health centres.

Recognition
Akhil Bharatiya Vidharthi Parishad has announced that the government has recognised the Gujarati medium Class X1 of B N Virani High School and Swaminarayan Gurukul High School in the Bhavnagar city. The centre for music examination has also been sanctioned as previously students had to go to Amreli to sit for examination.

Civic polls
About 63.29 per cent voting was reported in the elections to the 12 wards of the Botad nagarpalika which was held on Sunday 12. Four voters Kaliben Ranchhod, Nagarbhai Thakarasi, Jagabhai Gaful and Kalibe Parshotam have been sent in custody on charges of bogus voting. Counting will begin on April 20.

Boy arrested
Ahmedabad: Navrangpura police on Monday arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with various vehicle thefts in the city. Navrangpura senior police inspector S G Gohil said that Niraj alias Ajay Jagdish of Bhatiya Pole, Raikhad was arrested with two Sunny and one Luna two-wheelers, which he had reportedly stolen from Karanj and Navrangpura police station areas. Niraj8217;s arrest follows the earlier arrest of Alkesh Mahendra Tiwari of Snehdeep Society, Jivraj Park, Vijaygiri Hasmukhgiri Goswami of Kumud Society, Jivraj Park and Rajiiv Sureshbhai of Raghuvir Apartment, Naroda. Police in all had recovered 12 vehicles from the four and had taken all except Niraj on remand.
