In Andhra, TDP alleges political bias in relief work

The Telugu Desam Party TDP, alleging that the Andhra Pradesh government was showing 8216;8216;political discrimination8217;8217; in conducting relief and rehabilitation operations, today demanded the Centre provide an efficient body to monitor the process. The party has also sought Rs 2,000 crore for the flood-affected in the state.

8216;8216;There has been discrimination in distributing relief materials and the flood-affected are unhappy with the conduct of the state machinery,8217;8217; TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu told reporters after touring some of the flood-hit areas here on Sunday.

Alleging that the state had failed to come to the rescue on time, Naidu demanded that the Centre grant at least Rs 2,000 crore aid and ensure the relief work was monitored.

On the visits of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Naidu said, 8216;8216;Instead of making an aerial survey, they should have interacted more with the people and toured the places to get first-hand knowledge.8217;8217;

Naidu demanded that family of each deceased be given Rs 3 lakh, besides rice, kerosene and other material for a household for two months.

Meanwhile the BJP has asked the Centre to declare the floods in Andhra Pradesh a 8216;8216;national calamity8217;8217; and announce a relief package of Rs 1,000 crore
