The truck involved, officials said, bore Gujarat registration GJ-02 ZZ 7899.
The Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) has announced a two-day protest in front of all deputy commissioner (DC) offices across Punjab on December 18 and 19, warning that if the Government fails to address farmers’ demands, they will block trains from December 20.
“The decision to intensify the agitation was taken in response to the Punjab Government’s failure to fulfil its commitments made to farmers. If the demands continue to be ignored even after the two-day DC office protests, rail traffic will be blocked at Amritsar, Ferozepur, Sangrur, and Bathinda,” said Sarwan Singh Pandher, coordinator of the KMM.
The call for the DC office protest was given last week after a meeting held at Kisan Bhawan in Chandigarh, according to Jaswinder Singh Longowal, president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta Azad, who chaired the meeting.
KMM leaders accused the AAP Government of insensitivity towards farmers’ issues. “The state government’s silence on the Electricity Amendment Draft Bill 2025 showed that it was following the policies of the BJP-led Centre,” Pandher said.
Jang Singh Bhateri, another KMM leader, accused the Government of turning Punjab into a “police state”, adding that citizens have the right to protest against government policies in a democratic country.
“While criminals continue to roam freely, the police carry out raids at 3.30 am to arrest farmer leaders ahead of protests. It is a direct indication that the AAP Government is quietly supporting the BJP and facilitating the implementation of anti-farmer policies,” Pandher alleged.
“Rail blockade is not a matter of prestige for farmers and workers. The Government should resolve the issues in time to avoid escalation,” Pandher added.
KMM leaders also said the Government had detained over 600 farmers to foil a road blockade protest announced earlier, but the agitation took place at nearly 20 places in the state on December 5.
Rs 3.77-crore damages for ‘losses and theft’
The KMM demanded that the Punjab Government compensate farmers for losses and the alleged theft at the Shambhu border, where the protest site was forcibly dismantled by the police in March on government orders. The morcha claimed that compensation of Rs 3.77 crore should be paid immediately.
The organisation also strongly condemned the December 10 police lathicharge on protesting farmers in Rajasthan’s Tibbi town, alleging that the BJP Government there was siding with corporate interests, ignoring local residents and violating environmental laws in the name of ethanol projects.
The leaders further alleged that the Centre was weakening the rights of states and accused it of attempting to hand over agriculture to corporate players through laws such as the Seeds Bill, framed without consulting farmers. They said such legislation amounted to the betrayal of farmers.
KMM leaders said they would oppose all anti-farmer laws and actions by both the state and central governments. They also demanded immediate release of flood compensation, withdrawal of fines and FIRs related to stubble burning, and timely resolution of farmers’ issues.
