With elections for 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra scheduled for January 15, the Congress party has instructed its local units to form alliances with other parties of their choice or to proceed independently.

“We have given clear instructions to our local units that the decision to form an alliance should be taken at their level. The only stipulation is that there should not be any alliance with the constituents of the ruling Mahayuti,” said Maharashtra Congress chief Harshavardhan Sapkal on Tuesday.

While the Congress has clarified its position, the other two allies within the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)—the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP-SP—are primarily focusing on select municipal corporations.

“The final decision regarding alliances rests with our top leadership. We believe in contesting the elections as MVA,” said Sunil Mane, spokesperson for the NCP-SP.

In regions like Sangli and Jalna, the NCP-SP relies on influential leaders such as Jayant Patil and Rajesh Tope to finalise their election strategy. In Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, insiders within the NCP-SP hinted at the possibility of forming a united front against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP has said that it will contest against ally NCP in Pune.

The discussion about a united front emerged after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced plans to contest against NCP in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, citing that an alliance would only benefit a third party.

“The united front may include Ajit Pawar-led NCP. A meeting of all Opposition parties has been organised on December 19 and 20 in Pune to finalise the decision, where NCP-SP Maharashtra chief Shashikant Shinde will also be present,” said a leader from the NCP-SP. Both NCPs had recently joined hands in municipal council polls to take on the BJP.

For the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, the Mumbai civic body elections are particularly crucial. “Both the Thackeray brothers have come together to protect the interests of Mumbai. We expect that all those who want to save Mumbai should come together,” said Shiv Sena-UBT leader Sanjay Raut.

When asked about the Congress’ decision of going solo in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Raut responded that Congress appears confident after the Bihar Assembly election results. “But we feel that the Congress should have come with us,” he stated.
