NEW DELHI, June 10: Over a period of three weeks, the enforcement wing of the Delhi Vidyut Board has detected over 1,600 cases of power theft and arrested over 45 persons in this connection. The enforcement wing had begun its crackdown on May 18 after the induction of a senior CBI officer Debashis Bagchi as IG Enforcement. A superintending engineer had been exclusively placed in the wing to monitor and coordinate all enforcement raids.
Giving information on the raids, DVB spokesman Jagdish Kapoor said that on one occasion over 1,000 makeshift connections were removed from one area alone. In another area, over 50 polishing units were removed at one go. Theft had also been noted in a number of ice factories. He said that the Delhi Armed Police has provided a platoon and a CRPF company to help conducting the raids.
