MUMBAI, NOV 1: The Import Module of the Indian Customs Electronic Data Interchange EDI system was inaugurated by G S Tampi, Chief Commissioner of Customs, Mumbai, today.

The EDI enables electronic assessment of cargo, reducing the time taken between submission and finalisation of customs clearance documents, and also introduces more transparency in the system. The EDI has already been implemented in the export module of Mumbai Customs earlier this year.

On the import side, initially only paper products are being taken up for electronic assessment; other goods will be taken up later.

On the export side, duty drawback shipping bills are also likely to be electronically processed very soon.
