Illegal structures in Lucknow University razed

Acting on its stance to remove encroachments from the campus, the Lucknow University LU administration today dismantled 11 illegal set-ups on the old campus.

According to LU officials, all encroachments dismantled belonged to employees of the university. Finding a vacant space near the Machli dwaar, the employees had raised one and two-room permanent structures and were living there for almost a decade, the officials said.

Later in the day, LU continued its operation against the students facing criminal charges, booked under different types of disciplinary actions. Nineteen students were expelled. All are deemed second-rung leaders and some had even contested for the last year8217;s Lucknow University Students8217; Union polls LUSU. With this, overall 57 students have been expelled and more likely to be on the list, which LU has decided to release in phases.

During the removal of the illegal set-ups in the morning, the V-C himself was at the spot, alongwith the proctoral board members. 8216;8217;The V-C has directed us to ensure that not a single encroachment remains in the varsity. For this, we may go for a demolition drive also,8217;8217; said LU proctor Dr A N Singh. 8216;8217;If need arise we will be taking the assistance of the Municipal Corporation,8217;8217; added Singh.

The V-C, a few days ago, had made a startling disclosure, claiming that encroachments near the employees8217; quarters were being used for flesh trade and drug peddling. Following this, the university authorities had unanimously decided to remove all encroachments from the campus.

According to LU officials, more than 80 people are inhabiting on the campus illegally. 8216;8217;And they include both LU employees and outsiders,8217;8217; said the proctor.

The university administration has reiterated its declaration to make all-out efforts to restore academic activities in the campus. 8216;8217;When the University reopens, you will find very pleasant changes. No student with shady background, no illegal occupancy in hostels, no gunner of students8217; leaders8230; you will now feel the educational atmosphere here,8217;8217; said members of proctoral board.
