The 1.7 mv Tandetron Accelerator Machine TAM was inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur IIT-K by former secretary Department of Science and Technology, V S Ramamurthy, on Saturday.
The Rs 11 crore machine has been exported from Netherlands and is the first of its kind to be installed at any institute of the country.
The machine is equipped with the facility tonbsp;develop censor devices that can help in the detection of bombs and mines. Director IIT-K, Sanjay Govind Dhande said, 8220;Censor devices can strengthen the security system and become useful for the national security.8221;
The TAM aims at providing common platform for researchers in the filed of physics, material sciences, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and bio sciences. The machine can explore the possibilities of multiple usages of metals.
Dhande said the machine will perform two main functions8212;-developing suitable Ion beam for diagnostic purpose at nano and micro level and developing focused Ion beams for prototype fabrication of devices for engineering, biological and biomedical application.
