It seems the Karnataka police are close to cracking the December 28, 2005, attack on Indian Institute of Science, following the interrogation of suspected militant Bilal Ahmad Kota, arrested in Bangalore on January 5.

Bilal has revealed his possible link to the IISc attack during two rounds of narco-analysis tests when he indicated that he had supplied the AK-56 used in the attack that had killed a retired professor of mathematics from IIT, Delhi. He has also stated that he drove the car in which the attacker was brought to IISc.

The Karnataka Police today filed a remand application in a city magistrate8217;s court seeking extended custody of Bilal to 8220;interrogate and gather more evidence8221;.

The court has extended his police custody by a day. However, Bilal remains legally un-represented. During the raids at his house, the police have seized two AK-56 weapons, a satellite phone and explosives. Bilal has reportedly maintained that he had been assigned the task of handing over the weapons to an unidentified person and that it was his first assignment. However, he has denied links to the IISc attack.

8220;Whatever he said during the interrogation and the narco-analysis are quite different. We need to find more evidence,8221; a senior police officer said.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka police have indicated that one Shahid, involved in an attack on a police special task force office in Hyderabad, could have been a perpetrator in the IISc attack as well.
