Do you have a musical background?
No, I have not got any training in music. If I sing, people would run away. But I love listening to ghazals, old Hindi movie songs as well as the recent Bollywood numbers. I often buy CDs of the songs I enjoy.
What prompted you to be a judge of Indian Idol 4?
My mother-in-law is a huge fan of Indian Idol. When I got the offer, she insisted that I accept it.

I don8217;t watch television much. But I have seen some episodes of Indian Idol along with my mother-in-law.
All other three judges of the show-Javed Akhtar, Kailash Kher and Annu Malek-are associated with music. What8217;s your role as a judge?
I will be commenting on whether a contestant has the X-factor. I would also be giving my extra two bits on the contestant8217;s potential in singing. I am not the kind of person to fight, but I will definitely not hesitate to give my opinion.
Who according to you is X-factor?
There is a misconception that 8216;X-factor8217; is linked to the physical appearance. For me, it is not appearance but that one extra quality or characteristic that stands out from the rest. It is not necessary that an extrovert would stand out. Even an introverts have the ability to impress. I was suggesting that the contestants need not undergo a complete makeover. They are best as their natural selves.
Amongst the earlier Indian Idol winners, who is your favourite?

During the elimination rounds, which city did you think had potential winners?
It is a very difficult question to answer, but I feel there were some talented participants from Gwalior and Ludhiana. But I must say, the girls across the country are really great this time. I hope, for a change, one of them would walk away with the title.
What was the toughest thing to do as judge?
Saying 8216;no8217; to a participant was the toughest. I felt sad, but we had to eliminate those who couldn8217;t sing at all. As an actor, I am used to having scripts. Initially, it was scary not having one. By now, I am very comfortable.
You said earlier, that you are not going to do films as your priority is your son.
Yes, I am still not ready to return to Bollywood as my son is just three years old and movies involve 24X7 devotion. Judging a show doesn8217;t really demand so much of my time and I can manage both. I also do plays whenever something interesting comes up.
