Pakistan cricket was thrown into fresh crisis today when former foreign secretary Shaharyar Khan resigned as PCB chairman saying he was 8220;hurt8221; by star batsman Younis Khan8217;s refusal to be captain for the Champions Trophy.

Dr Naseem Ashraf is expected to take over after Shaharyar submitted his resignation to PCB patron-in-chief and Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf. Khan said that he quit over Younis8217; refusal to captain the national team and the Oval ball-tampering fiasco, officials said.

8220;I thought this is the right time to step down and pass the responsibility to someone else. The Younis Khan episode has hurt me more than the Oval fiasco,8221; Khan told AFP.

8220;There will be a press conference tomorrow Saturday to announce the new chairman by the patron but it is expected to be Dr Naseem Ashraf,8221; PCB Director Operations Saleem Altaf said. Dr Ashraf is a serving member of the Board8217;s ad-hoc committee and considered to be very close to the president.

Yesterday, Younis had relenquished the captaincy in dramatic fashion saying he didn8217;t want to be 8220;dummy captain8221; after which the PCB appointed Mohammad Yousuf in his place. The captaincy slot fell vacant Inzamam-ul-Haq was banned for four matches for 8220;bringing the game into disrepute8221; during the Oval Test in August.
