Humpy capitalises on Elena blunder

SEPT 3: Overnight leader in the girls category of the Asian junior championship under-19, International Women Master IWM Koneru Humpy Elo 2288 was lucky enough to escape from a piece down position and managed to hold Uzbekistan girl Elena Levushkina Elo 2103 on objection and remained atop the standings with 4.5 points after five rounds on Sunday.

International Master IM Tejas Bakre sidelined compatriot S Satyapragyan to emerge sole leader after five rounds in the boy8217;s section at the Avion Hotel here.

Yu Ting of China is following Humpy with 4 points in the girls section while Pendalya Harikrishna, Sunderajan Kidambi and Said Rakhimbekov Kazakistan are following Bakre in the boy8217;s section with 4 points each.

Against Humpy in a game of Caro-Kann Defence Pano-Botvinnik Variation, Elena got good positions on 20th move when she played Qh38242; for Humpy8217;s passive play.

Under time trouble Humpy blundered a threatened Knight on d58242; and played Rh58242; on the 36th move. Elena captured the kinght with cd5. But Humpy drew home as her opponent repeated a move three times. Humpy took objection on this ploy by her opponent and claimed for a draw which was agreed by the Chief arbitor.

Unrated Ting played excellently to beat Tania Sachdev in a marathon game that lasted for 85 moves.

In a game of Sicilian Dragon Classical Variation, Tania played Qb6 on the 22nd move and lost the exchange on the 25th. Later, Ting got control on the e8217; file and increased pressure on Tania who got a pawn on 35th move. In rook versus bishop and pawn ending, Ting played a Rbl on the 47th but Tania failed to capitalised and played Bd6 instead of a6. Ting won the game in 85 moves.

Coming to the boys8217; section, in the top table game between Tejas Bakre and S Satyapragyan of Sicilian Defence Scheveningen Variation, the latter played with a faulty plan with Rg8 on the 14th move and g5 on the 15th keeping his king in the centre. Bakre capatilised on this by sacrificing his knight on 17th move. He sacrifised an exchange on 18th move and in return got back the piece on 20th move and with three pawns to an exchange.

Bakre forced the exchange of Queens on the 24th. Later, he simply pushed the passed h8217; pawn and got a queen on 36th move. Satyapragyan left with no option but to resigned on 39th move.

On the second board, the P Harikrishna-Surya Sekher Ganguly duel of Grunfeld Defence, saw Harikrishna getting pass d8217; pawn on the 13th move. On the 21st, he sacrificed a pawn and got an advantage. He sacrificed another on the 35th move and increased pressure with pawn on d7. On 37th move, he got a piece with a threat of queening d8217; pawn. Later Harikrishna won the game in 51 moves.
