November 27: Gaurav Hinge of Navi Mumbai School, Vashi, emerged champion in the under-12 boys’ of the Junior Selection chess tournament organised by Bombay Chess Association at Zandu Pharmaceutical Works Canteen today.
Hinge drew his sixth and last round match with Omkar Kulkarni and remained unbeaten with 5.5 points. Kulkarni and Prerak Choudhary tied on five points each but Kulkarni got the runner-up spot with a better tie-break.
In the under-8, Siddharth Kotian of Vidya Vikas Vidyalaya, Vasai, won all five games in a row and leads alone with five points. In the fifth round, he defeated Parth Agarwal of Gokuldham School. Viviktesh Agwan is only half a point behind the leader. The tussle between Agwan and Kotian will decide the championship in the last round.
Following players have been selected in the under-12 category for a year’s coaching camp.
