NEW DELHI, February 8: A gang of highway robbers was arrested by the Sarita Vihar police yesterday. Around 2.30 a.m. yesterday, some policemen from the Sarita Vihar Police Station intercepted a white van near the Kalindi Kunj Link Road. There were four men inside the van which was carrying 60 packets one kg packets of Henko washing powder.
When the policemen questioned the occupants of the van, they apparently tried to get away. The policemen, however, managed to stop them. Investigations revealed that the washing powder had been stolen from a truck.
DCP Srivastava said the gang used to move around in a white Maruti Gypsy and a Maruti Van. One of them, usually Idris, would scout for a truck on any highway and stop it, posing as a police officer or an excise official.
The other members of the gang would join him later and force the truck driver to drive to a deserted area. Then they would tie up the driver and his companions and abandon them on the way. The goods were usually unloaded in a rented flat and later sold to specific customers. For each strike, the gang took a new flat on rent.
Srivastava said the consignment of the Henko has been recovered. The police have also found the consignment of copper wires, looted from a truck in Dilshad Garden last month, and a consignment of insecticide, stolen from Vasant Kunj last year. These were found in a godown in Malviya Nagar.
