A National workshop on ‘Role of Indian Women in Techno – Nationalism’ was inaugurated at High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) on Thurday by VM Bendre, director, Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), as part of the Golden Jubilee celebration of DRDO and Centenary Celebrations of HEMRL. The workshop was organised by HEMRL Women’s Council.

The objective of the workshop was to focus on the progress made in the recent past and futuristic avenues in the areas of high energy materials, missiles, composite materials, medicine, art, law, management and safety .

The chief guest released the special issue of the in-house magazine ‘URJA’, on the occasion.

In her inaugural speech, Bendre appealed to the participants to make concerted efforts for nation’s multi-dimensional growth and pointed out that since India primarily exists in the villages, if women are motivated there for education, professional courses, it would be real empowerment of the women. Guest of honour,Rohini Devi, technology director, HTCC, ASL, Hyderabad, elaborated on the development of carbon composite materials for high temperature applications as she brought out the importance of techno-nationalism.

Dr. A. Subhananda Rao, outstanding Scientist and director, HEMRL and chairman of the organising committee said that the main objective of this national workshop was to highlight the accomplishments of Indian women and their role in techno-nationalism – wherein technology denied by advanced countries were developed indigenously by the concerted efforts of scientists in the relevant field along with the Indian women who contributed meaningfully.

Nearly 300 delegates including scientists from DRDO, ordnance factories, academic institutions and private industries, participated in the workshop while presentations were made by Meera Borvankar, special IG Crime Branch, Pune; Tessy Thomas, project director, Chandrika Kaushik, additional director IC, DRDO HQ; Nabnita Radhakrishnan, joint director, DRDO HQ; Dr (Ms.) Girija Wagh and D Chitra Rajagopalan, associate director, CFEES, New Delhi among others.
