
CHANDIGARH, June 28: Nearly 270 women on two-wheelers were challaned for not wearing helmets today before the instructions on suspending the drive till July 15 were passed by the Administration. Those challaned included a woman police constable as well.
UT Home Secretary N.K. Jain, when contacted, said the Administration had decided to suspend challaning women riding without helmets till July 15, the date of next hearing of the special leave petition filed by the Administration before the Supreme Court.
quot;We shall request the apex court to give us proper instructions in this regard and act accordingly,quot; Jain said. quot;However, we shall continue to educate women two-wheelers riders about the benefit of wearing helmets until then.quot;
Official sources said the decision to suspend challaning was taken after several delegations met UT Administrator Lt Gen B.K.N. Chhibber retd today. They argued that Sikh women should be exempted from wearing helmets as their religion did not allow it.
Earlier, city Traffic Police had deployed personnel at 30 points mainly to cover the sectors where offices are located.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Traffic S.S. Randhawa said a total of 397 motorists, including 270 women, were challaned for driving without helmets. Other chief offences were jumping red lights and driving with films on the windows. Seven motorists were also challaned for driving with red lights atop their vehicles. A woman police constable, Balwinder Kaur, was challaned for not wearing a helmet.
