NEW YORK, July 22: A killer heatwave sweeping across much of the United States for the last few weeks has taken a toll of more than 115 lives.

Temperature in several places including Washington and New York rose to about 37 degrees celsius yesterday and were still higher in southern states, reports said.

Weather experts held out no hope of relief this week.

According to reports, at least 82 people died in Texas, which included 40 illegal immigrants who were trekking the desert. Another 22 died in Louisiana and 11 in Oklahoma state.

Meanwhile, at several places electric supply companies asked customers to preserve power as demand rose sharply, mostly because of use of air conditioners.
