The headmaster of a tribal school in Maharashtra’s Trimbakeshwar tehsil is on the run after it was found that he allegedly misbehaved with girls.

The Sant Gadage Maharaj Mission at Berwal village, which runs the school, has asked 56-year-old Nagorao Jungalaji Nagose to retire while an inquiry by the state Tribal Development department is on.

Nagose allegedly used to call Class VII students to his room for personal work such as cooking and washing clothes. He allegedly beat them up if they disobeyed.

On September 19, some boys sneaked out of the school for a movie. ‘‘We returned around 11 pm and saw the headmaster and two girls of our class on a cot in his room,’’ claimed Suresh Laxman Pawar, a Class VII student.

As the news spread, villagers met the school director and demanded action. On September 23, Nagose fled the school after submitting a letter, saying he won’t return. He apologised for his ‘‘mistake’’ without mentioning what it was.

The Tribal Development Commissionerate has ordered an inquiry and a team of officials visited Berwal today. They said that as per the new code of conduct issued for the staff, no staff member can call a student after 7 pm.
